I gained my qualifications in general horticulture and landscape design in the mid 1980’s. Since then I have designed city and rural gardens throughout the greater Wellington region, Kapiti Coast, Horowhenua and the Wairarapa. I am therefore well acquainted with a diverse range of environmental, climatic and soil conditions.

Apart from designing gardens great and small I am frequently invited to present talks to garden clubs and service groups and to hold seminars at our rural property. I provided information for the now defunct Consumer Home and Garden magazine, and have featured in various publications such as NZ Gardener, Dominion Post and Contact newspapers as well as gardening programmes on radio.

It has also been my privilege to be involved with soft and hard landscaping designs for “Homewood”, residence of the British High Commissioner, planting plans for embassy gardens, a roof top garden for the Wellington Club, full designs for a coastal “Bed and Breakfast” and extensive soft landscaping plans for the Student Village at Auckland Unitech.

In 1987 I initiated a garden consultation service in association with Williams Gardens, Crofton Downs.

There are two complimentary aspects to my business; hard and soft landscaping designs drawn to scale and garden consultations. Hard landscaping refers to structural work such as fences, paths, pergolas, decks, water features, retaining walls and driveways. Soft landscaping deals with soil conditioning, planting and overall garden maintenance. Soil conditioning/preparation is my passion, for without it most plants will languish.

Both hard and soft landscaping designs involve bringing together seemingly disparate elements into a unifying whole – the age, style and building materials of each home, exterior and interior colour schemes, climatic conditions, topographical features, clients’ needs and budget. Given the nature of Wellington’s terrain I will often employ a surveyor to set levels and salient points; therefore designs are professionally executed from which they can be accurately quoted on.

I am also used as a sounding board for clients’ ideas and to realistically appraise the extent of work requested with regards to re-sale or increasing the value of each property.

With both services a consultation fee is involved – price on application. I work with a small team of dedicated professionals who share my ideals; that of working with clients to achieve a lasting home and garden environment of which we can all be proud.
